Separator Residence Time

Description
Computes the liquid retention (residence) time in a gas-liquid separator — the average time a parcel of liquid spends in the vessel's liquid section at the design flow rate, per API Specification 12J vessel-sizing practice. A direct volume-over-rate identity, the sizing check every separator design reduces to once liquid volume and rate are known.

SymbolUnitDescription
tminLiquid Retention Time
VbblLiquid volume held in the separator's liquid section at the design liquid level.
QSTB/dLiquid flow rate through the separator.
Assumptions
  • Steady-state, well-mixed flow through the liquid section — no significant short-circuiting or dead zones reducing the effective residence time below the nominal V/Q value
  • Standard 2-phase gas-liquid service — foaming, heavy emulsions, or significant slugging require longer retention time than the standard 1-4 minute range and are not accounted for by this simple identity
Limitations
  • Does not size the vessel itself (diameter, length, gas-capacity/droplet-settling check) — only the liquid-retention-time relationship; full API 12J sizing also requires a gas-capacity (Souders-Brown) check this calculator does not perform
  • The 1-4 minute guidance range is a general-service rule of thumb, not a universal requirement — foaming crudes, emulsions, or slugging service commonly need longer retention, sized case-by-case
  • Assumes the stated liquid volume is genuinely available for retention (i.e., below the normal liquid level and above the low-level shutdown) — does not compute that volume from vessel geometry
Use Cases
  • Separator sizing check: Confirm a proposed or existing separator's liquid volume provides adequate retention time at the design liquid rate, per API 12J guidance.
  • Rate derating: Determine the maximum liquid rate a given separator can handle while staying within the target retention-time range.

Foaming crude (common in some shale/tight-oil plays) or heavy emulsions typically need retention times well above the standard 1-4 minute range — consult vendor/field experience for the specific crude before sizing to the low end of that range.
