Description
Computes lease operating expense per unit of oil produced — a standard normalized operating-cost metric used to compare wells or leases of different sizes and to track cost efficiency over time.

Assumptions
- Annual LOE and annual oil production volume are both measured over the same well or lease and the same one-year period.
- LOE per barrel is computed on an oil-volume basis; this calculator does not allocate LOE across oil and gas streams for a well producing both.
Limitations
- For a well producing significant associated gas or NGLs, allocating 100% of LOE to oil volume overstates the true oil-only unit cost — a proper joint-cost allocation (e.g., by revenue share) is outside this calculator's scope.
- Does not distinguish fixed costs (which fall per-barrel as production grows) from variable costs (which don't) — the blended ratio can mask which of the two is driving a change in LOE/bbl over time.
- Capital expenditure (workover capex, recompletions) is excluded by definition — this is an operating-cost metric only.
Use Cases
- → Well/lease benchmarking: Compare operating efficiency across wells or leases of different production scale using a normalized cost-per-barrel figure rather than raw LOE dollars.
- → Trend tracking: Track LOE/bbl over time for the same well as production declines — a rising trend signals that fixed costs are increasingly burdening a shrinking production base, a common driver toward economic limit.

LOE per barrel varies enormously by artificial lift method, well depth, water cut, and field infrastructure age — there is no single industry-standard benchmark figure; compare against peer wells in the same field/formation rather than a generic number.
