Description
Calculates the kill mud weight required to exactly balance formation pressure with no surface (annular) pressure, from a stabilized SIDPP reading. This is the standard kill-weight-mud equation used to prepare both the driller’s method and wait-and-weight kill methods.

Assumptions
- SIDPP is stable and accurately read (see the Formation Pressure from SIDPP calc for the same caveat)
- TVD used is the depth of the kick zone, consistent with the SIDPP-to-formation-pressure relation
- The kill mud can be raised to the calculated weight without excessive gel strength, barite sag, or ECD problems that would themselves risk losses or a second kick
Limitations
- Does not include a trip margin/safety factor — many operators add 0.2-0.5 PPG above the calculated KWM per company policy; this calc returns the theoretical balance point only
- Does not check the calculated kill weight against MAASP/fracture gradient at the shoe — verify separately before circulating
- A single-kick-zone calculation — does not address multiple pressured zones open simultaneously at different pressures
Use Cases
- → Driller’s method second circulation planning: Calculate the kill weight mud needed before starting the second (kill mud) circulation of the driller’s method, after the original kick has been circulated out on the original mud.
- → Wait-and-weight kill sheet preparation: Determine the kill mud weight needed to begin weighting up mud on surface immediately, for a single-circulation wait-and-weight kill.
- → Well control drill / training: Practice the standard kill-weight-mud calculation against a known SIDPP and TVD scenario as part of rig crew well control certification drills.

Permian Basin
Wolfcamp/Bone Spring kicks typically require a modest 0.3-1.0 PPG kill weight increase given the basin’s generally mild overpressure — large required increases should prompt a re-check of SIDPP stabilization or TVD.
Haynesville
Severe Haynesville overpressure can require kill weight increases of 2+ PPG; confirm the resulting KWM against MAASP at the last casing shoe before circulating, since the margin in this play is often tight.
Global
Always cross-check the calculated KWM against the planned mud weight program and the rig’s mixing/weight-up capacity before committing to a kill schedule.
