Description
Converts a formation pressure at a given depth into the equivalent mud weight needed to balance it — the standard way pore pressure and fracture gradient are expressed for mud weight program design.

Assumptions
- Formation pressure value is reliable (from a direct measurement or well-calibrated prediction)
- TVD is the true vertical depth at which the pressure was measured or predicted
- No significant pressure ramps within the interval being characterized by a single EMW value
Limitations
- EMW is a static comparison — actual required mud weight in a dynamic (circulating) well also depends on ECD, not just static EMW
- A single EMW value does not capture pressure transition zones; plot EMW vs. depth to identify ramps and seal/breach risk
- Near-balance EMW values (close to the planned mud weight) carry higher uncertainty and should include a trip margin
Use Cases
- → Pore pressure identification: Convert predicted or measured pore pressure to EMW (PPG or kg/m³) for direct comparison against the current mud weight.
- → Mud weight program design: Plot pore pressure EMW and fracture gradient EMW vs. depth to define the safe mud weight window and select casing setting depths.
- → Kick identification from pit gains: Estimate the EMW implied by an observed influx to help quantify how underbalanced the well was at the time of the kick.

Permian Basin
Normal pore pressure EMW is ~1078-1138 kg/m³ (9.0-9.5 PPG); Wolfcamp/Bone Spring overpressure can push EMW to 1318-1438 kg/m³ (11-12 PPG) or higher in places.
Gulf of Mexico
Shallow-water normal trend EMW≈1078 kg/m³ (9.0 PPG); deepwater subsalt sections frequently require EMW >1680 kg/m³ (14 PPG) due to severe overpressure.
Haynesville
Extreme overpressure is common, with EMW often exceeding 2040-2160 kg/m³ (17-18 PPG) — narrow mud weight windows require careful casing design.
North Sea
Central Graben high-pressure zones below the Chalk can show EMW of 1560-1800 kg/m³ (13-15 PPG), requiring HPHT-rated equipment.
