Description
Computes equivalent circulating density — the effective mud weight while circulating, accounting for annular friction pressure loss on top of the static hydrostatic column. ECD governs whether a well stays within its mud weight window (above pore pressure, below fracture gradient) while pumping, extending the existing hydrostatic/EMW pair to dynamic (circulating) conditions.

Assumptions
- Annular pressure loss (APL) above the depth of interest is already known from a hydraulics model, PWD (pressure-while-drilling) measurement, or offset-well data
- TVD is the depth at which ECD is being evaluated, typically the bit or the casing shoe
- Mud weight is uniform along the column above the evaluation depth (no significant cuttings loading or gas-cut sections)
Limitations
- Does not itself compute APL — a full annular friction-pressure model (e.g., Bingham plastic or power-law laminar/turbulent flow) is required as an input and is out of scope for this calculation
- Does not account for cuttings loading, which increases effective annular density beyond the clean-mud ECD computed here
- Surge/swab pressure transients from pipe movement are a separate, additional effect not captured by steady-state ECD
Use Cases
- → Narrow mud weight window screening: Check whether ECD while circulating approaches the fracture gradient in formations with a tight margin between pore pressure and fracture pressure.
- → Managed pressure drilling (MPD) planning: Use ECD as the key control variable when planning surface backpressure to maintain a target downhole equivalent density.
- → Lost circulation risk screening: Flag intervals where ECD approaches or exceeds the known fracture gradient, indicating lost-circulation risk while circulating at the planned flow rate.

Long laterals with high annular friction can add 0.3-0.8 ppg (35-95 kg/m³) of ECD above static mud weight at the toe of the lateral, a key consideration in narrow mud-weight-window Wolfcamp/Bone Spring intervals.
Gulf of Mexico
Deepwater wells with narrow pore-pressure/fracture-gradient windows below the mudline often require managed pressure drilling specifically to control ECD within a tight margin.
Haynesville
High mud weights combined with long laterals and small annular clearances can push ECD increases above 1 ppg (120 kg/m³), a major factor in casing design and MPD adoption in this play.
