Description
Computes the mass of barite (or other weighting material of known density) required to raise a given volume of drilling mud from a current to a target mud weight, accounting for the volume the added barite itself displaces.

Assumptions
- Barite density of 4200 kg/m³ (API/ISO standard barite, SG ≈ 4.20-4.33) is representative of the weighting material in use
- No other solids (drilled cuttings, LCM) are being added simultaneously — this is a barite-only mass balance
- The current mud weight (MW1) and volume (V) are accurately known from tank measurements
Limitations
- Does not account for dilution if water or base oil is added simultaneously with the barite (common in practice to manage rheology) — that requires a combined volume/mass balance
- Assumes ideal mixing with no settling losses during the weight-up operation
- For weighting materials other than barite (e.g., hematite, calcium carbonate), substitute the correct material density for ρbarite

Haynesville
Severe overpressure can require weighting up to 17-18 ppg (2040-2160 kg/m³) or higher, approaching practical barite-loading limits and sometimes requiring higher-density weighting agents.
Global
Adding large volumes of barite increases mud system solids content and can adversely affect rheology and ECD — always re-check PV/YP and ECD after a significant weight-up.
